Apple and cinnamon oat crumble

applecrumble_2971_16x9
Overview:

This is a traditional dessert with a hint of spice. Apples are a lower potassium fruit and oats add a crunchy taste which is high in soluble fibre. If you are on a low-potassium diet, count one portion of crumble as one fruit portion.

Ingredients:

  • 450g cooking apple, peeled, cored and thinly sliced.
  • 75g brown sugar
  • 100g plain flour
  • 75g rolled oats
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 75g butter or (hard) margarine

Preparation:

Preheat the oven to 190o C / Gas Mark 5.

Place the sliced apple in a small ovenproof pie dish and sprinkle with 25g (1 oz) of the sugar.

Mix the flour, oats cinnamon and remaining sugar together in a bowl. Cut up the butter or margerine into small pieces. Add to the oats and rub in with your fingers until the mixture in crumbly.

Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the fruit. Bake for 40-50 minutes, until the crumble is golden brown and the fruit juices are bubbling up the side of the dish.

Serve with whipped cream or crème fraîche.

Notes:

For a change Try making this recipe using pears instead of apples and adding 1 teaspoon ginger instead of cinnamon to the crumble mixture. Hint Cream and crème fraîche are lower in potassium and phosphate than ice cream or custard.
